The aim was to gather comprehensive insights into consumer behaviours and preferences when it comes to drinking in hospitality venues. Methodology: Dual Approach with Qualitative and Quantitative Intercepts 📊🗣️ Our approach combined both qualitative and quantitative intercepts across eight high tempo hospitality venues: four in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and four in Bangkok, Thailand. We conducted 80 intercepts per market, with 10 qualitative and 10 quantitative intercepts at each venue. This robust methodology ensured a holistic understanding of each market. Target Audience: Local Alcohol Consumers 🎯🍷 Our target respondents were local consumers above the legal drinking age who were actively consuming alcohol in the venue, focusing primarily on those drinking spirits and cocktails, with a smaller segment drinking beer and wine. Tourists and expats were excluded to maintain a focus on native consumer behaviors. Quantitative Survey: Structured Insights 📋💻 For the quantitative intercepts, we administered surveys in both English and local languages using the Qualtrics platform via iPads. Our interviewers led the respondents through the questions, ensuring accuracy and clarity in responses. The objective was to determine which coffee and syrup combinations were most appealing to both consumers and professionals (baristas and bartenders). This insight would guide the client in refining their product offerings and marketing efforts to better meet market preferences. Methodology: Central Location Taste Test 📍☕️ We recruited 250 respondents, comprising 200 consumers and 50 baristas & bartenders. Over the course of five full business days, each respondent participated in a 15-minute taste test session, sampling 5 different coffee and syrup mixes. The sessions were conducted by a dedicated team of 5 interviewers, ensuring a streamlined process and consistent data collection. Challenges: Ensuring Punctuality and Participation 🕵️♂️🚶♀️ Managing the logistics of this large-scale taste test posed significant challenges, particularly in ensuring respondents arrived on time and in adequate numbers. Our team went above and beyond, even intercepting potential participants on the busy streets of Shoreditch to meet the required sample size. This proactive approach was crucial in maintaining a high show rate and achieving our recruitment goals. This distinction underscores the cultural differences in technology adoption and the varying levels of acceptance of privacy trade-offs. The Balance of Tech and Privacy 🛡️👨👩👧👦 The insights from this study are indicative of a larger trend: families prefer their children to be equipped with smartwatches rather than smartphones, highlighting the delicate balance between connectivity and exposure to screens and the internet. The preference for smartwatches stems from their functionality that allows parents to stay connected with their children while mitigating concerns over privacy and content consumption.
